Anastasiia Dubinkina

from fragments to futures

Discarded ceramics are reborn through a fusion of mosaic craft and digital tools.

Designer and ceramic artist Anastasiia Dubinkina and Vojtěch Mareček explore how to turn ceramic waste into sustainable surfaces through mosaic craft, digital innovation, and material experimentation.
Despite their durability, ceramics are frequently discarded after breakage, leading to loss of material and cultural value. This project explores the reuse of ceramic fragments through design, technology, and craft, rethinking waste as a valuable resource.
MSE student Vojtěch Mareček (HSLU) supported Anastasiia to develop a hybrid system for tile production, surface design, and localized material reuse. Based on her concept, he developed the digital component, including scanning, sorting, and algorithmic layout generation.
Ceramic fragments are scanned, digitally sorted, and arranged with Al/code based patterning to guide physical prototypes. This blends Trencadís’s mosaic technique and robotic-arm-assisted fabrication, uniting traditional craft and technology.
From fragments to futures serves designers, architects, builders, and communities seeking sustainable building materials with unique aesthetic qualities.
From fragments to futures advances the circular economy by nurturing community value and economic growth. The resulting surfaces function as both art and craft works, enhancing resource consciousness and strengthening connections to local material culture.
