Untangling Relationships to Foster Care in Isolation

This graduation project explores how isolation shapes the experience of care among patients, care providers, and relatives, and how their relationships influence this experience. Field research was carried out at the Swiss Paraplegic Centre through participatory exercises with care teams and interviews with patients to understand the emotional, relational, and procedural dynamics of isolation.

Analysis of the findings revealed the potential for interventions that support relational and collaborative care in isolation. These aim to empower patients to play an active role in their care journey, stay informed, and share isolation guidelines with relatives. By offering engaging, accessible tools and fostering shared responsibility, the project encourages relatives to understand and respect isolation and its related guidelines.

Ultimately, the work reimagines care as a collaborative effort between patients, care providers, and relatives, placing relationships at the core of rehabilitation and care.
