Sustainable UX-Design

Web applications consume unnecessary amounts of energy – often due to inefficient design. My master’s thesis addresses this issue by combining UX design with sustainability. The Sustainable UX Design Framework I developed is based on ISO standard 9241-210 and the Design Value Framework, offering practical tools for creating energy-efficient web applications without compromising usability. Three sustainably optimised prototypes of the HSLU website demonstrate the framework’s effectiveness.

This work is aimed at UX designers and shows how projects can be strategically evaluated, revised, and planned – in a way that is both sustainable and user-centred. The framework not only provides actionable guidance, but also reshapes the understanding of UX towards a more responsible, resource-conscious design of digital products.
