Anhand der Metalle Kobalt, Tantal und Neodym, einer seltenen Erde, wird der Weg von der Mine bis zum fertigen Produkt nachgezeichnet. Die drei Rohstoffe stehen exemplarisch für die materiellen Grundlagen eines Alltags, in dem digitale Technologien längst unverzichtbar geworden sind.

What exactly goes into our laptops, and where do the raw materials come from? The installation ‘The World in a Laptop’ offers an insight into the hidden workings of digital devices. Using the metals cobalt, tantalum and neodymium, a rare earth element, the exhibition traces the journey from the mine to the finished product. These three raw materials exemplify the material foundations of everyday life, in which digital technologies have long since become indispensable.
