The hidden jewel of the energy grid

Digital transformer stations as a key enabler for a successful energy transition.

Digital transformer stations as a key enabler for a successful energy transition.

Why:
The energy transition, driven by CO₂-neutral generation, is reshaping infrastructure needs. Digital transformer stations are vital for integrating renewables and stabilizing the grid. As digitalization lags, new service opportunities make effective support crucial.

What:
In collaboration with Pfeffer GmbH, Johanna developed a communication strategy and service concept to support system operators’ transition to digital distribution grids. These service design-based solutions guide strategic decisions in the digitalization of transformer stations.

How:
To identify leverage points in the energy transition of distribution grids, field research was conducted with system operators and industry stakeholders through interviews, shadowing, and stakeholder events. Insights were synthesized to inform collaboration and service concepts.

For whom:
The primary target group is the distribution system operators. Key insights are also valuable for industry, manufacturing, and academia, supporting stakeholders in navigating the complexity of the energy transition and making informed decisions for a future-ready, digitalized grid infrastructure.

Impact:

Effective rollout of digital transformer stations accelerates electrification and makes it easier to bring renewables online, reducing blackout risks. As the grid evolves, citizens can participate with solar, EVs, and heat pumps, helping to build resilience and flexibility for operators.
