Uncovering gaps in socially sustainable tourism

Beyond the environment and economy: Why social sustainability should be the foundation for thriving tourism in Switzerland.

Tourism in Switzerland significantly contributes to creating numerous opportunities, employing around 170,000 people in 2023, and accounting for 5% of the GDP. This shows you the impact it can create environmentally, economically, and socially. However, every success brings challenges; thus, is this success sustainable? My thesis initially focused on identifying gaps in Switzerland’s sustainable tourism system. Many perceive sustainable tourism as solely environmental and economic, neglecting its social dimension and challenges. My research focuses on the social obstacles posed by tourism, stressing the need for social sustainability through mutual respect, healthy interactions, and understanding between tourists and locals.
