Für die Audio-Installation «mhm» hat Nathalie Lötscher Pflanzen aus den Büros und Aufenthaltsräumen der HSLU Musik in der dortigen News Lounge versammelt. Dort summen die Pflanzen im Chor und erzählen ihre Geschichte, die sie mit den Menschen verbindet. In der anschliessenden Phytomantie-Sitzung (von «phyto» Pflanze und «mantie» Wahrsagekunst) stellen die Zimmerpflanzen ihre seherischen Kräfte zur Verfügung und antworten auf Fragen aus der Runde. Sie geben ihre Antworten mittels transparenter Scheiben verschlüsselt weiter. Die Deutung der Scheiben gelingt den versammelten Menschen nur als Kollektiv. Die Pflanzen unterstützen den Deutungsprozess, indem sie hier und da «mhm» dazusummen.
Die Arbeit kann etwas über uns erzählen: welche Beziehungen wir zu unseren Mitwesen, etwa den Pflanzen, haben, wie wir historisch mit ihnen verstrickt sind, wie wir sie uns aneignen, inwiefern die menschliche Kultur Teil der Pflanzenkultur ist, oder wie wir Wissen neu nutzen könnten, bspw. für eine kollektive, wohltuende Wahrsagung.

For the audio installation «mhm», Nathalie Lötscher has gathered plants from the offices and common rooms of the Lucerne School of Music in its News Lounge. There, the plants hum in chorus and tell their story, which connects them with the people present. In the subsequent phytomancy session (from «phyto» plant and «mancy» the art of divination), the indoor plants put their clairvoyant abilities at the disposal and answer questions from the audience. They pass on their answers in encrypted form using transparent disks. Those present can only interpret the discs as a collective. The plants support the interpretation process by humming «mhm» here and there.
The work can tell us something about ourselves: What relationships we have with our fellow beings, e.g. the plants, how we are historically entangled with them, how we appropriate them, to what extent human culture is part of plant culture, or how we could use knowledge in new ways, e.g. for a collective, beneficial divination.
