Uniting Forces To Foster Co-Learning On Microfibers

This thesis explores the critical issue of microplastic pollution in our oceans, focusing specifically on microfibers—an under-researched and underrepresented form of plastic pollution stemming from textile production. Through conducting a thorough literature review and interviewing young adults, researchers, designers, and educators, this research reveals the intricate nature of the problem. This thesis highlights isolated perspectives of stakeholder groups and identifies key challenges, necessitating a design management approach for effective intervention. As Sir David Attenborough once said, «If children grow up not knowing about nature and appreciating it, they will not understand it, and if they don’t understand it, they won’t protect it, and if they don’t protect it, who will?». This encapsulates the core realization of this thesis: that education is crucial in addressing environmental challenges, aligning with the fundamental ethos of this project.
