Paula Pucher

Hashtag Doglove

This project analyses the relationships between people and dogs, serving as an illustration of the relationship between people and pets on social media. In her photographic work, Paula Pucher examines the diversity of dog breeds found in Switzerland and questions how dogs are portrayed in social media and how their appearance is shaped by society. Inspired by her personal experiences with her dog on Instagram, she presents a slightly alienated, ironical depiction that questions how dogs are humanised in online spaces. At the same time, her work explores how dogs are turned into objects of beauty and used as an extension of personal identity. In doing so, she also encourages a deeper reflection on our changing relationships with animals. The images have a playful quality, using humour and a sense of the familiar to enable the viewer to question and challenge the visual representation norms of dogs on social media. Staged studio photography and image manipulation are at the core of her visual approach.
