Terms of exposure

An experience at the boundaries of identity, agency and digital selfhood.

AI-generated portraits resemble us closely, sometimes unsettlingly so. Yet when confronted with an image created beyond our own intention, can we still perceive it as an authentic extension of ourselves?

In «Terms of Exposure», identity emerges in the uncertain space between human input and generative representation. Artist Raphaela Pichler quietly orchestrates a process that visitors perceive as fully automated, operating discreetly behind the installation’s surface. The generative AI, trained on images of Raphaela herself, subtly infuses each visitor’s digital portrait with fragments of her identity.

The work confronts us with unsettling ambiguity: At what point does our identity dissolve into synthetic fabrication? Can we recognize ourselves in an image we know isn’t truly ours, yet which unmistakably resembles us? And how do we navigate the tension between intimacy and estrangement when facing these representations of ourselves?
