Designing the Discovery

Understanding and Supporting the process of finding a Thesis topic for students in Switzerland

How do students in Swiss Higher Education arrive at a thesis topic, and what shapes the choices they make along the way? This project explores that question by examining thesis topic selection not as a single decision, but as a process of searching, exploring, and making sense of opportunities. Through interviews with students and recent graduates, insights from a thesis supervisor and collaboration partner, and a review of relevant literature, I investigated where students look for ideas, what influences them, and where uncertainty emerges. The findings revealed three interconnected patterns: unclear starting points, uneven access to key stakeholders, and a reliance on informal networks to navigate the process. These insights informed a strategy that uses the university as a shared point of access, making thesis-related opportunities and support more visible within students’ everyday environments. Rather than directing students toward specific topics, the strategy aims to increase visibility and accessibility, helping students spend less time figuring out where to begin and more time exploring, developing, and shaping meaningful thesis directions.
