Das CERN, die Europäische Organisation für Kernforschung, kann als eine Art Zeitkapsel des physikwissenschaftlichen Fortschritts betrachtet werden. Das Projekt «Immersion statt Protokoll» macht die lange Geschichte der Institution anhand ihres umfangreichen Fotoarchivs erfahrbar. Rund 11’000 Bilder eröffnen Einblicke in Forschung, Infrastruktur und wissenschaftlichen Alltag. Mithilfe virtueller Realität und des Prinzips der Serendipität entsteht ein offener Zugang zur visuellen Geschichte des CERN.

Exploring the CERN image archive in a spatial and emotional VR world

CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, can be seen as a kind of time capsule of progress in the physical sciences. The ‘Immersion Instead of Protocol’ project brings the institution’s long history to life through its extensive photo archive. Around 11,000 images offer insights into research, infrastructure and everyday scientific life. With the help of virtual reality and the principle of serendipity, open access to the visual history of CERN is created.
