Sensing the System
Over the last three decades, commuting has increased in Switzerland, where commuting for long distances is familiar in societies nowadays. Several factors contribute to this phenomenon. Consequently, the commuting distance creates several issues in the working population’s professional and personal lives. In the end, those issues impact their work performance which is the sole purpose of this travelling
in the first step, to analyse the difficulties in the commuting routine of the professionals commuting experience and summarise the encountered pain points with a systemic approach. The second step is to develop a solution concept that relieves the determined pain points in the commuter’s daily routine.
Strategy
To gain a holistic understanding of the negative impacts of commuting long distances, many study sources were examined via desk research. To delve deeper into the peculiarities of the topic, field research through an ethnographic interviewing approach of commuting professionals and co-creation sessions with field experts in several phases of the thesis project was conducted.
The results brought out a list of prevailing paint points in the commuting regime of the assessed commuting professionals. Furthermore, through research, discovered the clustering of pain points in several different categories.
Emergence
The co-creation session with the representative of the public transport organisation showed no room for manoeuvrability in the public transport services for resolving the commuting issues. Therefore the possibility of taking action against the hurdles in the commuting regime of people could only be addressed by the employers on a rather individual level for their staff.
Thus, emerges the solution concept of commuting management measures. By implementing those measures, the employers actively support their employees in having a low-stress commute. It requires adaptation of elementary configurations of a working model, relocation strategy and the commuter’s benefits. It ensures that every employee’s commute is represented in the organisational process without sacrificing output quality at work. The solution concept was iterated with the help of prototype testing and evaluation. A risk assessment and value attribution have been done on the iterated version of the final solution.
