The past is imprinted in us. Also for Laura Gauch, her family’s history has left a mark on her and her relatives. Her mother’s family had to flee Chile after the military coup of 1973, in which dictator Pinochet ousted president Salvador Allende. Laura’s great aunt’s husband, Juan Bustos, was a legal advisor to the Allende government at the time, and later became famous as human rights lawyer in exile, and member of the Chilean Parliament after democracy was restored. He died in 2008.

Laura’s graduation project, Raíces (“roots”), is a documentary film exploring how her generation deals with this past. It tells the story of her great aunt’s family, who now lives in Barcelona, and introduces the viewer to different family members and their way of dealing with the past. The film then follows Lua, Laura’s cousin, who is wondering how this history also shapes her identity. The viewer is introduced to the stories and thoughts of a displaced family full of things left unsaid. Rather than giving final answers or resolutions, the film offers an inquisitive view of how the past influences the present, inviting self-reflection.
