Study Tour to Istanbul

From April 3 to 11, 2014, the group of master students who enrolled in International Financial Management (IFM) program went to the study tour to Istanbul, Turkey. The aims of the study tour were to exchange the knowledge between Turkey and Switzerland, to gain deeper understanding of the economic, personal, and social dimensions of international finance, to experience the spirit of doing business in Turkey, and to enjoy a wide range of city tours. Furthermore, they obtained 3 ECTS credit points.

The program was administered in Switzerland and Istanbul. First, in Switzerland at the kick-off seminar, students gained some preliminary information on the culture and the recent developments in Turkish financial markets, economy, and politics in an interactive environment. Then, in Turkey, the tour started impressively at Sabanci University, which was ranked as 77th on the Financial Times 2012 ranking for Europe’s best management schools. The students had a chance to meet competent Professors at Sabanci University and to get deeper theoretical and practical information on Turkish financial market. Afterwards, during the visits of Turkish Central Bank, Istanbul Branch, and Finansbank, students met top managers who shape the Turkish economy. During the Istanbul stock exchange visit, the participants discovered the investment instruments offered and the mandatory requirements to be eligible to be quoted on the stock exchange. Moreover, a visit to the trading room showed how a stock exchange works in real life. Finally, Sabanci Holding, one of Turkey’s most known and successful companies, enlightened the participants how to enter an Emerging Market for the first time and how to run their business in profit. Of course, we did not forget to have leisure time and fun in the magnificent city of Istanbul. On the weekend sightseeing and boat tours, students discovered a new culture, a mixture of Asia and Europe.
