The International Sustainable Tourism programme is a new bachelor’s programme at the HSLU’s Business Department, developed in partnership with UN Tourism. This three-year course offers a unique global experience:

  • Year 1: Madrid, Spain.
  • Year 2: Online & Global Internship
  • Year 3: Lucerne, Switzerland

While the programme is titled International Sustainable Tourism (IST), it includes both sustainable tourism and business aspects to it.

Why Study Tourism?

Tourism is not only about travel; It is one of the largest, fastest-growing industries today, contributing significantly to the global economy. It involves multiple sectors such as business, marketing, mobility, destination development, and cultural heritage. Tourism creates jobs, strengthens local economies, and improves infrastructure.

Stepping into the tourism industry is perfect for those who:

  • Love working with people and communicating with different cultures;
  • Are creative and passionate about problem-solving;
  • Want to create something long-lasting to make a difference;
  • And, simply, love working while traveling and enjoying life!

Why Study Tourism Instead of Hospitality?

Tourism and Hospitality are closely linked fields, but there are some differences:

Hospitality primarily focuses on service-oriented businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and event planning (MICE – Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions).

Tourism covers a broader scale, including travel agencies, destination management, cultural heritage, and environmental conservation.

Studying tourism provides a wider perspective and opportunities, offering more career opportunities and a deeper understanding of the industry’s impact on the global economy and environment.

Tourism is Changing and the Importance of Sustainability is Rising!

We have #OnlyOneEarth! Without taking care of the environment and protecting cultures the foundation of tourism will slowly fade away as our world continues to evolve.

Over the past few decades, tourism has played a vital economic, social, and cultural role and its demand is steadily on the rise. With increased connectivity, technological advancements, and changing consumer preferences, tourism has also led to significant challenges, such as over-tourism and environmental degradation.

Tourism is slowly becoming a threat to the environment and communities, which has created an urgent need for sustainable practices that address environmental challenges, infrastructure strain, and socio-cultural issues.

What is Sustainable Tourism?

Tourism can never be fully sustainable. Sustainable tourism, however, refers to traveling or managing tourism activities that minimise negative impacts on the environment, culture, and local communities while maximising long-term benefits. It focuses on balancing economic growth with environmental and social responsibility.

Sustainable tourism should:

  • Prioritise environmental protection and conservation.
  • Promote social equity and cultural diversity.
  • Enhance the quality of life for local communities.
  • Support a strong, dynamic economy that delivers jobs and long-term prosperity.

UN Tourism as a global organisation is the biggest advocate of sustainability in tourism, pursuing the UN’s 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is one of the key aspects of our course.

The Rise of Sustainable Tourism

As travelers become more conscious of their impact, demand for eco-friendly travel, ethical tourism, and carbon-neutral experiences is growing. Sustainable tourism promotes responsible travel that benefits both the environment and local communities.

Understanding sustainability within tourism is crucial for professionals who aim to develop resilient, future-proof strategies.

A Fast-Growing Field with Limitless Opportunities

Sustainable tourism is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the world. As the industry evolves, the demand for skilled professionals in sustainability and tourism management is increasing.

Career opportunities in this field include:

  • Destination planning and management
  • Ecotourism development
  • Policy-making and regulation
  • Corporate social responsibility initiatives in the tourism industry

To create a future-oriented, responsible tourism industry, professionals need a strong foundation in both the tourism industry and sustainability principles.

Sustainable tourism ensures that we can continue to explore and experience the world while protecting our planet and enriching communities.

The future of tourism depends on responsible, educated professionals who can make a lasting impact!
